Ethanol blends run +30% more fuel than normal gas, meaning unless you were heavy at full boost on an e90 tune you would not see the effects of pre det until you tried to drive it on full kill with the e60. The car would feel suddenly faster and the you would feel the effects of pre - det the higher in the load and timing tables of the map you got because temps and ait would start climbing and e60 can only do so much cooling.

Pre detenation leaves flakes of aluminum on the porcelain and on the electrode (From the the piston) . It also would look like someone was stabbing your piston with an ice pick if it was pre-det. It would round the edges of the top of the piston and make it look porous(Tiny holes like a sponge)

Simple answer is it wasnt e85/e60 that ruined the motor. It was inappropriate break in for the first 100-1000 miles. Failure to properly seat and bed in the rings is why it started smoking. Because one should never highway drive a freshly built motor. It needed to heat up and expand the rings in uniform fashion by accelerating and decelerating (engine breaking) for those first crucial 500miles.its why he put our race cars straight on the dyno or use an engine dyno to break in new motors. We simulate normal stop light to stop light driving, then gradually increase the load. This makes sure the rings are properly and evenly expanding while wearing in... If you dont do this and just highway (steady speed /loads) drive a new motor without alternating speeds and loads, you tend to end up with your situation. You would of been better off just beating the f'k out of it out from the garage and it would of had a better chance to break in. The entire circumference of the rings would of warn in uniform fashion around the pistons and the walls of the cylinders. Which also brings up another pointbeing made that the piston /ring matching could have been wrong for the clearances of engine. But it wasnt the fuel. Yes as you suggested, next time. Do a quick leak check after warm up. A short street stop light to stop light drive. Bring it back in.. Check everything. Maybe do a quick compression test. Put it back together.. Then beat the snot out of the car for a few hundred miles and then do a final compression test to check deviations in the compression in each cylinder. That way you have better understanding of what the motor is doing at those crucial moments. Question? Did you all do an initial compression test and leak down test before you started it? So you knew the health of the motor before you drove it? That would of hinted at any initial engine problem if it was an improper clearance issue.

My saturn has not had that problem the timing chain tensioner broke and bent all valves and destroyed the entire block we have to replace the entire motor

Sorry but not pre-det. Its 100% your tune, you were probably rich, so this did not allow the engine to break in, none of the rings set in. The plugs are fowled from the tune and oil. You need to double check your PVC system as well. Also make your running the right oil for break in. Also replace your o2s.

There are people in here that know their engines but this guy doesn't read comments, so he keeps on going on and on for the last two videos on how the E85 caused the issue. NHRA motors that are BUILT for boost and makes your engine look like a Lego toy, doesnt even smoke anywhere near that much, so that whole it needs time for piston ring break in bullshit is just that, bullshit. You should not have told the engine builder anything about you running the lower octane fuel on the wrong tune and seen what would've come up with then

in theory, wouldnt less ethanol content running on a tune expecting the higher content cause it to be running rich? Based on the fact that ethanol requires a larger amount of fuel to produce the desired burn, meaning having more gasoline in that mixture wouldnt require as much fuel, in turn it would be running rich. And typically wouldnt a rich running engine be "safer" from knock?

That is not detonation. What you have is a mis-matched set of pistons and rings causing excessive blow-by and oil leakage, which in turn causes oil to be blown out the PCV system so hard that none of it collects in the catch can and enters the combustion chamber through the supercharger, where even more oil had previously made it up through the piston rings. After the oil burns it leaves black deposits, but also tricks your ECU into a false rich burn reading, where the ECU then leans the AFR out, which causes overheating as indicated by the bright white deposits on the plugs from the burned oil. If you want to know what true detonation looks like go to EricTheCarGuy's channel and check his recent ETCG dad's truck engine rebuild where his newly rebuilt engine was previously destroyed by detonation/pre-ignition.

No. The pistons and rings were not fit properly to the bore. Too much clearance caused the oil burning from the get go. E-85 runs cooler. Not the cause. Machine shop dropped the ball. Measure everything before you put it back together. Have had new motors with turbos and blowers. Never saw any oil burning like that.

BAD GAS DOESN'T SHRINK PISTONS. The only unbelievable part of the "reason" is that you're accepting detonation as the answer when the evidence otherwise is literally in your hands. Where are the cracked ring lands, the pitted piston surfaces, eroded head gaskets? Where are the galled wrist pins, the telltale overpressure signature line on the top rod bearing? Where's the toasted valve edges, the ERODED plug electrode (and not one wearing oil ash deposits)? Where was all this when you HAD good E90 gas in the engine to begin with and it was still smoking like an eighteenth century London factory?

What the hell is your engine builder smoking? Your rings seals are shot because that UNDERSIZED PISTON is rocking around the wrist pin and rounding the edges. If you underwent preignition long enough to "smack the piston" then why the hell were they loose *along* the wrist pin axis as well? THEY'RE TOO DAMNED SMALL and the builder's about to F*CK YOU SIDEWAYS.

I definitely agree with the load of comments talking about incorrect bore/piston sizing. Pre-detonation will definitely cause stuff like this, but it honestly seems more like a sizing issue and bad gas might have amplified that issue. Smoke on start up and idle, plus the giant loss of oil just points to sizing.

Is the same blower on the car now that was on the first engine? Wasn't the car having an "oil in intake" issue as well? I imagine the blower is plumbed for oil? Has that been checked? This is too fishy to be having such a similar problem across power plants.

I have a supercharged race engine (20 psi) that had some bad E85 run through it. It will rattle the head gaskets/lift the heads. It would make one good pass and then the car would slow down every pass after that. Replace head gaskets, repeat. Finally figured out it was the fuel. No smoke from the engine, just blowing the head gaskets, and pressurizing the cooling system.

Why was there oil in the blower and intercooler? The explanation is vague and wrong. The PCV system allowed oil to be sucked from the engine into the blower. There is no other correct answer to this question. Oil was being sucked into the intake system out of the engine from the beginning. It was mistaken as just a small amount during break-in, but it is evident in the video at McDonalds that there was a thick cloud of smoke. The oil was changed and the video showed black oil. They noted that it smelled like gas. Yes it would because incomplete combustion was occurring. The car was driven for three hours and almost ran out of oil. Excessive wear occurred on all moving parts. Excessive cylinder wear occurred. Incomplete combustion caused the unburnt fuel to wash the oil off the cylinder walls and excessive carbon damaged the rings and pistons. The engine was saved from complete destruction by refilling it, but the damage was already done. The incorrect octane level of the gasoline did not cause the damage to this engine. Call it Sampson. Agree, Disagree, or Plausible?

Judging from what I'm seeing, what I've seen from other built engines, and what the MASSIVE flood of comments below all say... You need a second opinion. Just like going to a second doctor for a diagnosis before the first one sells you a bunch of treatment. The thing is, this engine builder has a reason to not admit that they undersized the pistons if that IS what happened. Go find someone to do an inspection as an impartial third party.

I see all these comments about piston size and ring gap. Yes the pistons rocking back and forth is probably a problem but you have aluminum pistons and an aluminum block, check the ptw clearance. With it being aluminum the pistons need room to expand. I guess everyone is ignoring all the oil in the blower and intake though. You said there was a catch can on the passenger side valve cover, but wasn't the driver side connected straight to the blower? Anytime you have oil in the intake, it pretty much got there through pcv.

Compression ratio too high causing blowby on rings. Also make sure sparkplug holes have no burrs that can heat up and cause predet.

Dude, I've had banshees that smoked less on startup than that motor did and last time I checked a coyote wasn't a 2 stroke. That engine was burning oil from the first start.

No offense but there is no such thing as “pre detonation” my guess is that your confusing “pre ignition” with “detonation” 🤷🏼‍♂️ pre ignition is when the air fuel mixture ignites before the spark plug gets to do it, it has a flame front similar to the one caused by the spark plug. Doesn’t usually cause any damage just a loss of power. Detonation on the other hand is where the air fuel mixture ignites all at once like a bomb detonating, making a knocking or pinging sound and can cause a lot of damage. I hope I explained that correctly, if not you can google it, the information is out there. Anyway I enjoy your videos, have a great day! 😀

You should put an E sensor on it if possible to detect the purity of your fuel so it will retard or advance timing accordingly incase you encounter this type of situation again.. just a fail safe. To everyone saying wrong piston or ring to bore b.s. he didn't have this issue in the first few hundred miles until the low grade E was put in.. then the heat and vibration from pre-det oblonged the rings (causing the wiggle) and caused major blow by.. pay attention. Nobody blowing smoke.

Detonation damages/flattens rod bearings. Those bearings looked brand new. This oil burning leads me to believe the piston to wall clearance was off, hence the rocking piston when you checked it. That rocking motion wouldn’t allow the rings to seat

There is alot of poor information on these comments. One I keep seeing is that forged pistons grow more than cast aka have a higher thermal expansion coefficient. The process of production does not change the final product enough to have any significant impact on this material property for the same alloy. While in engineering school I took several materials classes of which we discussed this material property often. At a microscope level the atom structure may differ however this will not equate to anything of significance to anything measurable with micrometers.

What the F is predetonation? You either have preignition caused by carbon buildup or metal pieces glowing hot enough to ignite the fresh fuel/air mix or detonation caused by not enough octane in the fuel or to much compression. That engine isn't damaged by either. Find another engine builder.
